The idea of treating maladies of the mind by blasting the brain with noise sounds, to the layman, like kicking a television set in order to repair it. It is, however, on the cards. The noise in question is ultrasound. This has been used for decades to scan human interiors—particularly wombs containing developing fetuses. The ultrasound is reflected from surfaces within the body (such as the skin of a fetus) in the way that audible sound echoes from a cliff face. ASU, Penn Create Tech-Transfer Partnership To Bolster Resources, Commercial Chances

Arizona State University and the University of Pennsylvania have entered into a formal partnership to help each other commercialize certain technologies, the schools said this week.
The collaboration is believed to be the first of its kind in the US, according to tech-transfer officials from both universities. If successful, it could also serve as a blueprint for similar alliances between other US academic institutions, the officials said. Read More

Arizona State University has entered into a groundbreaking research and commercialization collaboration with Heliae Development, LLC and Science Foundation Arizona (SFAz) to develop, produce and sell kerosene-based aviation fuel derived from algae. Arizona Technology Enterprises (AzTE), the technology venturing arm of ASU, announced the initiative today. This biofuel project will focus on the commercial production of kerosene from algae using patented technologies developed by Professors Qiang Hu and Milton Sommerfeld at ASU’s Laboratory for Algae Research & Biotechnology. The research efforts of Hu and Sommerfeld in algal-based biofuels and biomaterials have already moved from the laboratory to field pilot-scale demonstration and production. Read More
